You will perhaps know it, but I really like the editions of the Red Ants . Each publication is the opportunity of a nice surprise, funny or poetic, sometimes both. With The Wacky , the house is no exception to the rule by making us discover the delicious Miguel Tanco .

For this small album, Spanish illustrator decided to honor the wacky , these characters soft heart that our world need. Page after page, he describes their qualities (somewhat convoluted or downright chewable) with very simple sentences, which will make us all think of someone we know well …

The images of Miguel Tanco, falsely naïve, are a simply astounding accuracy. Sure, this man must be a little magician to give birth this way, with a few pencil strokes, characters that one would think they have lived a lifetime there, laid on the paper, good warm between two pages.

The album reads right side up, upside down, to leaf through, lends, offers, extends at will … but the real feat of Miguel Tanco, is to have created an album never fails to smile and tenderness than most contagious. Thank you and congratulations, Mr. Tanco, for that nugget!

MAKING OF (LES FARFELUS) by Miguel Tanco

A little preview and thoughts about “Les Farfelus” are shown with some original art on the catalog and exhibit of 33 Mostra Internazione d’illustrazione di Sarmede at the section Planetarium.

I wanted to do a book about special people doing little things, so i made a list of people and asked myself why they were so special . For me, it turns out were little things, eccentricities, natural behaviour what made them special. My father was a beautiful person, really a wonderful man, he achieved so many things but one thing that I find unique about him was that he whistled while he dance, so I don’t know if he was a good person because he whistled or the opposite but I think they are related. He was a farfelus. I did a list and designed characters that for one reason or other were farfelus, They are people with something special. They are not connected, they are kids, artists, lawyers, retired men and women, photographers, fishermen, street cleaners or waiters. The only thing in common is to be a little off with the world and be able to live in his own way, even in offbeat; they are weirdos to others people’s eyes and his/her appearance is misleading. That’s is the glue that put together the book. The quality that has to have a farfelus are unknown ,and we have to discover it ourselves knowing the person and understanding his/her behaviour. Some of the character I discovered the reason why they were farfelus , others remains still a mystery to me. I drew a lot of them and some became clear that they will be in the book ,I placed them in their natural context and their actions were revealed. The selection for the book between all the characters is tricky because not every farfelus has a good visual image that can be shown reflecting their personality. It could be easier to explain it on words that to show it visually. For example, a real character that I drawn was Vivian Maier, a professional photographer that did beautiful photos but never showed a single photo to anyone ; That was an eccentricity that was worth a place in the book, but there’s not any interesting image ( or I couldn’t find it) that can show this fact. So I kept the concept and searched for a similar fact but with a different character, I found it with a group of musicians that are playing with no one watching, is the same concept but with a good visual image to show. In same cases they have a good image directly , like the fisherman that is happy when his grandson is catching a bigger fish than his..
